Beginner Mistakes That Block Accurate Tarot Readings

Every tarot reader remembers their first few readings.

The excitement of pulling cards, trying to memorize meanings and hoping to understand what the cards are trying to communicate is something most readers experience. Over time, however, many of us realize that learning tarot isn’t just about knowing the meanings of 78 cards. It’s also about developing intuition, maintaining energetic clarity and approaching every reading with the right mindset.

As someone who has worked with tarot for years and also guided students through their learning journey, I’ve noticed that beginners often make a few common mistakes. The good news is that they’re all easy to correct once you’re aware of them.

Here are some of the biggest beginner mistakes that can unknowingly block accurate tarot readings.

1. Starting Without a Prayer or Intention

This might sound simple or even like a rookie mistake, but in my experience, it makes an incredible difference.

Beginning a reading with a short prayer or a clear intention helps me feel centred before I connect with the cards. It also reminds me to approach the reading with humility rather than curiosity alone.

Many tarot practitioners follow different spiritual paths. Some invoke their favourite deity, some call upon their spirit guides, while others simply spend a few moments in silence. There is no single correct method.

Personally, I have found that offering a simple prayer - at least once at the beginning of the day - helps my energy remain aligned and protected throughout my readings.

Whatever your spiritual practice may be, entering a reading with respect and intention often creates a much stronger foundation than jumping straight into shuffling the cards.

2. Treating Every Card Meaning as Fixed

One of the biggest shifts in tarot comes when you stop asking: “What does this card always mean?”

and start asking: “What is this card trying to say in this particular reading?”

Yes, every card carries traditional meanings and symbolism.

But context changes everything.

A celebratory Four of Wands may indicate happiness and milestones in one reading. In another, depending on the surrounding cards and the question asked, it may point towards appearances, social expectations or even a hidden agenda.

The same card can tell different stories because every reading is unique. Instead of memorizing definitions, learn to understand the conversation taking place between the cards and the question.

Tarot is a language, not a dictionary.

3. Reading for a Highly Protected Energy

This is something I personally learned through experience.

Tarot can reveal a great deal about situations and people. However, there are times when an individual’s energy is deeply protected through strong spiritual practices, a powerful auric field or what some traditions describe as the grace and protection of a Guru or Divine guidance.

In such cases, the reading may become unusually difficult or even appear confusing.

One of my students experienced this while reading about her former boyfriend. She knew he had been emotionally abusive, yet the cards never seemed to reveal that aspect of him clearly.

She came to me feeling completely confused.

I suggested that before reading again, she invoked her favourite deity and set a clear intention: “Reveal the truth beyond the mask. Show me what I need to understand for the highest good.”

When she repeated the reading with that intention, the messages became much clearer.

That experience reminded both of us that tarot is not merely about pulling cards. Sometimes, a shift in intention changes the clarity of the reading.

Nothing is impossible with tarot, but occasionally we are guided to approach a reading differently. In my experience, that too is a form of divine guidance.

4. Asking the Same Question Again and Again

When beginners don’t receive the answer they were hoping for, it’s tempting to reshuffle the deck and ask the same question repeatedly.

Unfortunately, this often creates more confusion than clarity.

Instead of receiving deeper insight, the reader may end up mixing multiple energetic snapshots and struggling to interpret them.

If a reading doesn’t make sense, take a break.

Reflect on the message.

Come back later with a clearer mind rather than immediately seeking a different answer.

Patience is often part of the reading itself.

5. Reading While Emotionally Overwhelmed

Reading tarot immediately after a heated argument, during intense anxiety or while feeling emotionally exhausted can sometimes make interpretation more difficult.

When emotions are running high, it’s natural for personal fears and expectations to influence how we see the cards.

This doesn’t mean you should never read for yourself during challenging times.

It simply means that taking a few moments to ground yourself before beginning can often help you distinguish between intuition and emotion.

Sometimes, the clearest reading begins with a few minutes of silence.

6. Depending Only on Books

Books are wonderful teachers.

Every tarot reader benefits from learning traditional meanings, symbolism and card combinations.

However, if every reading sounds exactly like the guidebook, the personal conversation between you and the cards may never fully develop.

Over time, you’ll notice that certain cards speak to you in unique ways.

Perhaps The Hermit consistently appears before periods of important self-reflection.

Maybe the Queen of Cups repeatedly represents a particular type of person in your readings.

These personal patterns develop through observation and practice.

Allow yourself the space to learn them.

7. Forgetting That Tarot Is a Tool, Not the Decision-Maker

Tarot offers guidance.

It highlights possibilities, patterns and perspectives.

But it does not replace wisdom, personal responsibility or practical action.

One of the healthiest relationships you can develop with tarot is seeing it as a trusted guide rather than the authority that makes every decision for you.

The cards illuminate the path.

They don’t walk it on your behalf.

8. Every Reader Learns Through Experience

No tarot reader begins as an expert.

Every experienced reader has misunderstood cards, questioned their interpretations and learned valuable lessons through practice.

The important thing is to remain curious, respectful and willing to grow.

Tarot is not simply about predicting events.

It is about learning to listen- with your eyes, your intuition and your heart.

The more sincerely you approach the practice, the more naturally your confidence and understanding will develop over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I always say a prayer before reading tarot?

Practices vary from reader to reader. Many people begin with a prayer, affirmation or moment of silence because it helps them feel centred and focused before a reading.

Can one tarot card have different meanings?

Absolutely. While cards have traditional meanings, their interpretation depends on the question, surrounding cards and the overall context of the reading.

Why do some readings feel confusing?

Many factors can contribute, including unclear questions, emotional involvement, reader fatigue or personal interpretation. Some practitioners also believe that intention and spiritual preparation influence the clarity of a reading.

How do I become better at tarot?

Consistent practice, studying the cards, keeping a tarot journal and remaining open to learning from each reading are some of the best ways to develop confidence and accuracy over time.
